THE FOLLOWING ARE ABSOLUTE CONTRAINDICATIONS (CI) TO MASSAGE. MASSAGE TREATMENT IS NOT APPLICABLE
GENERAL
• Advanced Kidney Failure (very modified treatment may be possible with medical consent)
• Advanced respiratory failure (very modified treatment may be possible with medical consent)
• Diabetes with complications such as gangrene, advanced heart or kidney disease, or very high or unstable blood pressure
• Eclampsia – toxaemia in pregnancy
• Haemophilia
• Haemorrhage
• Liver failure (very modified treatment may be possible with medical consent)
• Pneumonia in acute stages
• Post-Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) – (stroke) – condition not yet established
• Post myocardial Infarction (MI) – (heart attack) – condition not yet established
• Severe atherosclerosis
• Severe (if unstable) hypertension
• Shock (all types)
• Significant fever (101 ° Fahrenheit/38.3 ° Celsius)
• Some acute conditions requiring first aid or medical attention – Anaphylaxis Appendicits CVA Diabetic Coma Insulin Shock Epileptic Seizure MI Pneumothorax Atelectasis Sever Asthma Attack Status Asthmatics Syncope (fainting)
• Some highly metastatic cancers not judged to be terminal
• Systemic contagious/infectious condition
LOCAL (REGIONAL)
• Acute flare up of inflammatory arthritis ( for example – rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, erythematous, ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s syndrome) – may be general CI, depending on individual case
• Acute neuritis
• Aneurysm deemed life threatening (for example – of abdominal aorta). May be general CI, depending on individual case
• Condition of sepsis
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Oesophageal varicosities (varices).
• Frostbite
• Local contagious condition
• Local irritable skin condition
• Malignancy, especially if judged unstable
• Open wound or sore
• Phlebitis, phlebothrombosis, arthritis (may be a general CI if located in a major circulatory channel)
• Recent burn
• Temporal arthritis
• 24 – 48 hours post inflammatory infection (target tissue and immediate vicinity)
• Undiagnosed lump
THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS REQUIRE AN AWARENESS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF ADVERSE EFFECTS OF MASSAGE THERAPY. SUBSTANTIAL TREATMENT ADAPTATION MAY BE APPROPRIATE. MEDICAL CONSULTATION IS FREQUENTLY NEEDED.
GENERAL
• Any condition of spasticity or rigidity
• Asthma
• Cancer including finding appropriate relationships to other treatments being given
• Chronic congestive heart failure
• Client taking an2-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, an2coagulants, analgesics or any other medications that alter sensation, muscle tone, standard reflex reactions, cardiovascular function, kidney or liver function or personality
• Client is immunosuppressed
• Coma (may be absolute CI depending on cause)
• Diagnosed atherosclerosis
• Drug withdrawal
• Emphysema
• Epilepsy
• Hypertension
• Inflammatory arthritides
• Major or abdominal surgery
• Moderately severe or juvenile onset diabetes
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Osteoporosis/Osteomalacia
• Pregnancy and labour
• Post MI
• Post CVA
• Recent head injury
LOCAL (REGIONAL)
• Acute disk hernia
• Aneurysm (may be general CI depending on location)
• Any acute inflammatory condition
• Any anti-inflammatory infection site
• Any chronic or long standing superficial thrombosis • Buerger’s disease (may be general CI) • Chronic arthritis conditions
• Chronic abdominal or digestive disease
• Chronic diarrhoea
• Contusion
• Endometriosis
• Flaccid paralysis or paresis
• Fracture (while cast or aber cast removal)
• Hernia
• Joint stability or hyper-mobility
• Kidney infection/stones
• Mastitis
• Minor surgery
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Piling oedema
• Portal hypertension
• Prolonged constipation
• Recent abortion/vaginal birth
• Trigeminal neuralgia
• The presence of pins, staples or artificial joints may alter treatment
